She gave him a quick kiss on the cheek, squeezing his hand gently as they went inside. Sachi avoided all of the workers, following her soul's guide to a far away room. She slid the door open quietly and scanned the room.
It was simply decorated with beige and cream like colors, and it was cold. It felt uninviting, the small tv that was in the corner echoing throughout the whole room. As Sachi stepped inside, closing the door after Charles was also inside, an old woman stirred in her bed, opening her eyes to gaze at the two of them.

Charles felt some relief. He figured that Sachi could make this woman happy and move on pretty quickly. He kept a friendly smile, which was not so awkward now that he had her to give him real reasons to smile.

The old woman watched the two for a very long while before smiling. "Oh, hello... I wasn't aware I was getting visitors today. I haven't had anyone visit me in years." She sat up weakly, pointing to the chairs beside her bed. "You can come and sit, I don't mind..."
Sachi smiled softly, grabbing Charles's hand again and going to sit down.

Charles understood that if Sachi held his hand, he would do anything she asked. She could hold his hand and walk him straight off a ledge.
He kept his smile and sat with her. He would let her do all the talking.

As they say down and Sachi got a better look at the old woman, her brow furrowed, as if she was trying to figure something out. The old woman smiled at them again.
"What brings you by to see little old me?"
"Well," Sachiko began, "A little birdy told me that you are missing a piece of your life's puzzle, and that missing piece is preventing you from achieving happiness. I've come to help you find that piece, Ms..." Sachiko trailed off, looking to the woman as if to ask for her name.
The woman laughed quietly. "Abe, miss. Mitsuko Abe."
Sachiko froze. Her eyes went wide. She stared on at the woman in horror and shock, her hand starting to tremble with Charles's.
The old woman looked confused at this reaction.

As it hit Charles, he tightened his grip on Sachi's hand. He sat up and leaned closer to her, placing his other hand on top of hers. He gave hers a good squeeze to show he was there for her.

Sachi stared at the old woman for a very long while before speaking again, her voice shaky and weak.
"Well... Mitsuko, what is it you desire...?"
Mitsuko smiled. "Are you like my genie...? If I wish for something, anything, will you give it to me?"
"Not exactly... I will simply try my best to help you get whatever it is you need."
Mitsuko smiled again but was interrupted by a sudden burst of coughs that lasted a good couple of minutes. She sighed, looking back to them tiredly. "You came here just in time, it seems..."
Sachiko looked to Charles sadly, moving her hand from his to Mitsuko's, trying to comfort her to the best of her ability. "Just tell me what it is you need."
Mitsuko looked out of the window thoughtfully. "I've always wanted to know more about my mother. She passed away when I was just over a year old, so I don't remember her. My sister always refused to speak of her and whenever my father brought her up, it was to say the most awful of things... I've lived my life hearing nothing but horrible words against my mother, but I know she was a good woman. I feel it in my heart. I Long to know her, as both a woman and as my mother. Can you do that for me?"
Sachiko nodded, leaning in closer and beginning to speak about the life that Sachiko Abe had lived, and what kind of person she had been. She talked about herself in third person, not wishing to reveal herself as Mitsuko's mother.

Charles listened as intently as Sachi's daughter. He realized the strangeness of it all, how he was in love with this old woman's mother, how on the surface, this visit looked like he was meeting Sachi's mother, but he was meeting her daughter, and the idea was difficult to understand. He knew he felt an emotional connection and decided that was all the understanding he really needed. He was stroking her back as he listened, trying to help her feel supported.

Sachiko spoke about herself in the third person to get daughter for well over an hour, leaving out the parts about divorce, depression, and death. By the time she was done speaking, Mitsuko looked very pleased and satisfied, the biggest grin on her face.
"I wonder how you know so much about her, but a genie does have power beyond my understanding." She laughed quietly, followed by another coughing fit.
Once Mitsuko had recovered from her coughing fit, Sachiko spoke again in a gentle voice. "Mitsu, what happened to your sister? Surely your father must be dead by now, but Kayako..."
"Papa has been gone for a long time." Mitsuko gently held her hand, a look of understanding in her old eyes. "Kayako died ten years ago. She lived a long life and got married and had children, things I never got to do. She was happy, but I knew she missed yo-, I mean, our mother. Even though she never brought her up, I could see it."
Sachiko nodded again, squeezing her hand gently. "I'm glad she was able to live well and take care of herself..."

Charles whispered a question to Sachi. "Do you want me to leave you two for a bit? I don't want to intrude or get in the way and I can imagine this is a very important to you." He felt like it may be strange for him to show his affections in front of Sachi's daughter or even be present, not knowing what the protocol could possibly be for such things.

Sachiko nodded slowly, looking over to him. "Yes, please, if you wouldn't mind. You can wait for me outside. I will be out shortly."

Charles nodded and stepped out. He sat down in a chair he found in the hallway close by and waited for Sachi. His thoughts bouncing around all of the mysteries that were surrounding him now.

Sachiko would come out to meet him after about a half hour. She watched the ground as they began to walk back to the apartment, being silent most of the way there. She only allowed herself to break down when they were far away from the retirement home, tears streaming down her pale cheeks at a rapid pace.

Charles was expecting this. He had felt the weight of it as well. He stopped and held her as tight as he could. stroking her and trying to give her all his warmth.

She practically collapsed into his arms, clinging onto him like some sort of pitiful small child. She sobbed uncontrollably into his chest for a few minutes before sniffling. "She's dying. I am finally able to be a part of my baby's life and it's just when she is getting ready to leave the world." She looked up to him. "What did I do to deserve this? I had a miserable life, my children being the only thing that made it worth while, and once I lost them, I died, and it's because of my death that I am stuck here having to watch my daughter wither away before my very eyes. What did I do?!"

"I don't think this is fair either. I would do anything to take this pain from you." Charles knew he did not have any answers, but all he wanted was to make her happy again. It was as compelling to him as her curse was to her. "I know you have lived miserably, and you have had to stay and exist in misery, but try to see the light. You got to make her happy. You got to make me happy. Your existence has brought joy to so many. Isn't that just a little comforting? You may go through so much pain, but because of you, so many have been able to live happy lives."

"But what about me? Why should they deserve it more than I? I never hurt anyone or did anything... I was just a girl from a poor family who got pregnant at fifteen. I never did anything, it all just happened to me." She wiped her tears away and shook her head. "I hate this feeling of permanent emptiness... I will never be able to have relief from it, even with you."

Her words, even though not meant to be hurtful, tore at his heart. He felt helpless, because no matter how hard he tried, she was going to feel empty. "Sachi, so many things have happened recently that even you, in your century of existence, did not foresee or understand. How can you be so sure that you and I can't have a fulfilling time together and make each other feel whole?"
His eyes were watery, but he continued. "I don't know why you were put through all of this, but we are here now. We share this time, and that is a miracle by itself." He now held her face in his hands. He was gentle, but firm. "I am going to fill that emptiness you feel with so much love that you will overflow, and you will forget that you ever felt empty, just like you have done for me." His eyes were intense, darting back and forth between hers, glistening with tears that had yet to fall, as if his determination held them back.
"I love you, Sachi."

Sachiko looked up at him, her face still red and sticky from crying, before hugging him close again. "I love you too, Charles." She stood on her tip toes and gave him a gentle yet passionate kiss, her arms wrapped around him and her body pressing against his firmly.
