Sachiko was still asleep in her chair, the sunlight shining onto her face from the window. For the first time, she truly looked dead. Her beautiful eyes were closed tight, her body limp in the chair as one of her arms hung off of it. This paired with her terribly pale skin made her look not like a ghost, but like a dead body, and the sight alone was enough to send shivers down anyone's spine.

Charles was relieved to see her. It did not occur to him, at least not immediately, that her being asleep was a very strange occurrence. He made sure to sit down quietly, noticing the breakfast on the desk. With a big smile, he took a bite and then looked back at Sachiko. He was now starting to realize that this was very strange, and remembered that she said she did not need to sleep.
He quietly walked over to her, and tried to make her more comfortable. She was cold, as usual, but he told himself that he shouldn't worry because she is already dead and cannot have died a second time in his office. He still felt like something could be wrong, but thought against trying to wake her.
He decided to finish the breakfast she brought him, and do some work, allowing her to rest in peace.

Sachiko had slept all throughout the day, only waking late in the afternoon near the end of his work day. She sat up in the chair, looking around the room in confusion before remembering where she was. She leaned forward so that her head rested on his desk, gazing at him softly. Her eyes had changed from dead to sad, and even though she didn't say anything, it was apparent that something was wrong.

"There she is. You slept like the dead." Charles knew something was wrong, but he wanted to keep the mood light. "So you do sleep then? Odd for a ghost." He glanced at the empty plate from breakfast. "By the way, where did you find that breakfast? I haven't had something so delicious since I left England."

"I made it for you." She smiled weakly. "I couldn't let you go hungry so I did my best. I'm not that good at making western style dishes but I know that's what you prefer so I did my best." She sat back up. "I'm much better at Japanese cooking."

"If that is what you consider 'not that good', I am excited to see what you can do." He noticed she seemed tired, like she did not rest well, but then again a ghost wouldn't rest well. "What is the matter?" He asked, sounding concerned.

"Hmm?" She looked up to him with tired eyes. "Oh... I don't know. I just... I feel off somehow." She looked down at her lap. "After I made the breakfast earlier, I... Well, I didn't feel any pull towards you anymore, like my soul simply decided to let you go. Then I got really sad and fell asleep. I don't know what's wrong with me right now..."

He felt as if his heart fell out of his chest and onto the floor. "Did I do something wrong? Have I upset you in some way?" He was confused and felt broken at her words. "I never meant to cause you to pull away from me."

"I don't think it's you... I think there's someone else who needs me right now, someone who needs me more than you." She smiled softly, still looking tired. "I will take care of it tomorrow... I wanted to stay at your apartment tonight if it isn't a burden."

He was visibly relieved, but still very concerned. "Of course you can stay with me. If you want, I can let you have my room." His face was sad and worried. "Have you ever been pulled away like this before? What if you don't come back?" The look of fear was on him again, but he tried not to show it to avoid causing any more stress for Sachiko.

"A pull has never been interrupted like this before, no... I don't fully understand it either. It's like this certain person has something more urgent than you do and I need to help them with it." She thought for a moment before looking him back in the eyes. "When I go to see whoever they are tomorrow, I want you to come with me."

"Me? Why would you want that?" In his mind, he had already decided to go. He wanted to be with her, and he was worried about what was happening, and the possibility that he might lose her.

"I don't know... I just feel like I shouldn't be alone." She sighed, looking around the office. "Anyways... Are you done here? We should be getting home before it gets too dark." She caught herself saying that word, the one she had kept out of her mouth since her death. "Home." "I-I mean, your apartment." She corrected herself quickly.

He noticed her catch herself. "Yes,-" he stood and reached out for her hand "- let's go home." With that, he led her out of the room and they made their way back home as the sun was setting. Charles worried about what the next day would bring, but he thought that as long as Sachiko was with him, things would be ok.
The walk home was mostly quiet. Just a few words were said, but mostly he just enjoyed her presence and tried not to think too much about everything that was happening. When they arrived at the apartment, Charles asked if she wanted to eat again.
"Dinner tonight?"

"Dinner? Oh." She thought for a moment, looking down at the floor. She wasn't in the mood to eat, to force something down her dead throat, so she shook her head. "I don't think I want to eat anything tonight. We can do something else, or I can wait for you to eat."

"Maybe just some tea." Moments later, as he poured the tea, he spoke again. "What exactly do you do to pass the time between 'work'?"

"I go to my favorite park in Tokyo. It's the one with the path of Sakura trees." She smiled. "It's a place that I will never forget, and it comforts me to go there and relax. I like to people watch, try to figure out everyone's life. It's fun to be invisible to the world around you sometimes."

"I have the perfect idea." He gestured for Sachiko to follow him. He brought the tea with him, and opened the way to one of the wooden terraces that looked out over the hills.
"We are a bit high up, but you can still seethe people down there going about their day, and sometimes you can see people in their apartments too." He sat in one of the chairs and started looking out over the surrounding area.

She watched the world around her for a moment before taking a seat beside him, watching Charles as she took a sip of tea. "Hmm... Do you come up here a lot? It sounds like it is also a hobby of yours to watch others." She grinned playfully. "Do you come here when you're wishing extra hard for that special someone?"

Charles sat quietly. He had never actually wished for someone or felt like he wanted a companion. It was like the idea never came to him. He wondered if this was why it hit him so hard to suddenly have Sachiko around him. All of the feelings and emotions he felt when she was with him, were they rushing in to fill a vacuum he never new existed, or was it because she was such an extraordinary person?
"I do come to sit here, but it isn't to watch people live their lives. I notice them sometimes, and occasionally see some interesting things, but mostly I come here to escape that. I like to sit here and feel like I have risen above all that noise and movement." He paused a moment, and looked at her "But I think I could get used to the idea."

She smiled softly, setting her tea cup down. "Well you're going to have to get used to the idea, because if I am to make you happy I must first locate your soul mate. It's going to be tough, but I'll do it soon enough... You're going to make me work extra hard, aren't you?" She laughed, though deep down something felt wrong. She had felt this feeling before, and she knew exactly when; it was the feeling she felt right before she died. She tried to ignore it as best as she could, not wanting to worry Charles, but she could tell that her own sadness and worry was starting to seep through her happy front.

Her words seemed off to him, like she was talking about something he had no interest in ever participating in. He did not really care for anyone in the world. He could safely say that he did not care for a single living soul. When she finished speaking, he saw a look on her face that he did not like.
"Sachiko, I refuse to allow you to be sad. There is no reason why I should not try to make you happy. You had a difficult life, and now you are having a difficult undeath. When do you get to be happy? When does your hard work pay off? I say the time is now." He was now standing defiantly, as if some unseen force may try to stop him. He had no idea how to do it, but he was determined to end the sadness she was experiencing.

She looked up to him with her big brown eyes, tilting her head slightly. "What...? Charles, I'm not supposed to have happiness. Ever. I was miserable in life so some unknown force condemned me to misery in death as well. I was selfish and I ended my life early. I let my children grow without their mother and I threw my entire family into grieving... All because I was upset with my situation at the time." She smiled sadly.
"Please don't worry about me. I am dead, it's not like anything matters anymore anyways."

"It matters to me, and I have decided that it is what I want. Your happiness will be my happiness. If it means I lose you forever, I can live with that knowing I ended this senseless punishment. Why should you still suffer when those you may have hurt are gone as well?" He was almost shouting, unable to control how strongly he felt. He just wanted to bring her suffering to an end now, regardless of his fear that he would lose her. All of the puzzles in his mind, the problems he couldn't find solutions to, they were solved now.

She flinched slightly at the raising of his voice before shaking her head. "Please, Charles... It is alright." She quickly downed the rest of her tea, grabbing her cup. "Come in, let's go inside. You haven't eaten yet and you did say you wanted to taste my Japanese cooking."

"Well... yes that does sound rather good." He was hungry, but he had not noticed, being so focused on Sachiko. He followed her in and sat where she did the night he made the sashimi.
"My kitchen is all yours, my dear." He waited patiently to see what she would make.

She nodded, going into his kitchen to look and see what ingredients she had to work with. After a thorough inspection, she thought for a moment before looking to him. "Hmm... Any special requests? Something you've wanted to try for a while but never got the chance to?"

Charles had been to just about every restaurant in the city, and did not think there was anything he had not tried. He was just interested in what she could make for him. "I don't have anything in mind, so just make whatever you want, and I know I will love it. Surprise me."

She nodded and began making sukiyaki, a dish consisting of thinly sliced beef, vegetables, and tofu. The more she cooked, the more she got lost and disconnected from what was going on around her. She had loved to cook while she was still alive and had missed it greatly ever since her death. As she began spacing out on the food, she hummed a pretty little ballad to herself, some happiness coming back to her eyes once again.

Charles was loving the new energy he was seeing in Sachiko. He made a mental note that she should have a fully stocked kitchen and some better cooking utensils. He started thinking about taking her shopping and having her choose what she wanted for the kitchen and dining area, and maybe even a place for her to rest, since she may be able to sleep now. Listening to her tune, he was happily watching her pretty hands and her lovely face and daydreaming.
