I'd like to start an RP where magic and gifted people are more open and everyday in a modern or final/fantasy-esque setting. There's still a certain mystique to certain creatures and magic, such as vampires and certain orders of magic being more rare. I have a character which I will post below, but I can't decide on a good way to start the RP that would bring other characters in. My character is a traveler who is a bit of a vigilante do gooder. He helps people out with problems like werewolf infestations, or property disputes between a newly reawakened spirit and the town that has taken over the land, or banishing demons. Stuff like that. I'd like to start an RP with a quiet seeming town or city with some problem or "treasure" that characters would gravitate towards.
Either some serious monster problem is going on, bringing in hired mercenaries or government officials to check it out, or there is a rumor of some fantastic treasure or ruin of a lost civilization to bring in treasure hunters. I just can't come up with anything.
Here's my character.
Salamander Johnson was one of those rare individuals who were so devoid of magic that they could actually negate magic. There were various names for his kind depending on the region; negator, void, super muggle, etc..
Salamander himself was not a very strong “Void” as he called himself. He could not direct his natural talent to do anything, it just was. People with magic or who were naturally(or unnaturally) gifted found their abilities limited when they were within ten paces of Salamander, and usually completely negated within five. A ranged attack was little better unless it was used to launch a real object at Salamander, for example, throwing a rock with one's mind. Picking up an object near to him would not work, though.
Salamander occasionally used this ability to teach those more magically inclined that they could not always rely on their powers to see them through a fight. One must use one's mind and the surroundings.
A traveler by habit, and a bit of a vigilante by trade, Salamander seeks out trouble and puts it to rest, be it werewolves running rampant, or just a property dispute between locals an ancient civilization that had been sealed away for a thousand years, only now making a comeback.
Life before Death and the journey before the destination are Salamander's philosophies of life. Although he would prefer to give everyone a second chance, he is not a complete fool, and will kill if necessary.
It hasn't been necessary yet, so perhaps it is an empty lie he keeps telling himself.
A laid back individual, Salamander takes life as it is and rolls with the punches. He enjoys philosophy and thought provoking conversation, as well as lore and magic. Though he cannot use magic, the theories behind different kinds of magic interest him. He would be a book worm if he could figure out how to carry all the books on his travels.
For combat Salamander uses a silver straight sword for one or both hands, a wooden steak attached to the wrist that strikes out with a muscle movement, and a pistol and sniper rifle with holy bullets, as he usually is forced to fight when it comes to vampires, werewolves, and demons. The silver sword is also useful for some other types of monsters.
