This is a story I'm working on, not for the contest though. Just let me know what you guys think if you decide to read it. There may be some errors idk though.
Two parents stand over the casket in the church; they hold each other and they cry as they look inside. Why do they cry? I know why they cry. A young girl stands over the casket; her lip quivers and her eyes moisten before her break down hits from looking inside. Why does she cry? I know why she cries. From them was a loved one took; gone way before his end. A hero in his last hour of death; oh how she wishes it had been her.
Just weeks ago the boy was a lively thing; going to school and movies as a teenager should. Oh how all loved this boy, his wit and charm were treasures held by all around him. The news of his death was heard by all and hit them hard with depression; he was revered from then as a hero. It seems as though my story has gone ahead of itself; let us start from the beginning.
As is the beginning of all stories; a boy met a girl and they fell in love. Oh how this boy loved the girl he had chosen, he would bring her flowers no matter what day it was, so she would know that he was always thinking of her. His brown eyes no matter how dark would get a sparkle when she walked into the room. Oh she was a beauty to behold, form so slender, skin so soft, golden hair draped over her shoulders with blue eyes to gaze from. An angel upon earth.
Their gaze caught from across the room; a shy smile upon her face and a goofy grin upon his before their gaze turned to the papers at their desk. That day the boy took it upon himself to strike up conversation; infatuated by the mere thought of this girl. He introduced himself at lunch time; starting first with his name…
His hand was outstretched to her; inviting her to partake in the most common of interactions when one meets another. He spoke to her with a quiet voice, so shy and scared his words were barely heard. “Hi…my name is Leon…” He left his hand in the air; shaking as he awaited her touch.
A smile, so cute and innocent played across her lips as she could hear the nervousness of his voice, so faint and quiet to the ear. She was the same way though she did not let it show; her heart raced as she looked at him and found the words at last. Her hand outstretched to his and gripped it gently before a shake was placed and she spoke, calm and serene “Hello Leon; I’m Kelly. Pleasure to meet you…”
It as an odd meeting that was sure; so different from the way most people greet one another now. The friends of the two looked at them with such confusion, asking why they would meet in such a way and then go silent soon after. It was the silent spell of love, something most all will hear at one time, hypnotizing were its bells, a sound that brought two together.
The silence soon passed, broken by the clearing of a nervous throat. Leon had noticed the silence as well that she had this look to her eyes that had made a very faint blush to come upon his cheeks. Though no matter how small the blush was thought to be it was apparent that it was enough for Kelly to see as she let out a giggle as it happened, it was a musical sound to listen to. Upon hearing this giggle and knowing in his heart that it had been directed at him because of his blush he could not make it leave.
The sounds of the bell for class fell upon their ears, the sign that their meeting had come to the inevitable close. Kelly stood up from the ground and began to brush herself off so that she could be sure that she was not bringing the dirt with her into class. She turned her head so that she could look into Leons eyes with a smile upon her face before she gave him a small wave and made her way into the school building, leaving Leon with a dumb smile upon his face.
The first meeting of future lovers, no matter how unsuccessful it may have seemed to be had been an amazing success. From this point on things went better than either of the two could have hoped, if such a thing existed it would have been perfect. Laughs were had, feelings confessed and love found. Oh how happy the two were.
When one was in the presence of the other the world seemed to just melt away and leave them to stand alone. Some envied what they had, some hated them for having it though the two didn’t care as they were happy and none could change that. We go now to the day this has been leading up to; the day that a boy had died and a hero was born…
Leon and Kelly walked hand in hand through the park on a cold winter night and watched as their breath was illuminated by the street lights as it mystified. 2 years since passed sine that faithful day, their love had grown to an unbelievable height since that day.
Infatuation was to be the undoing of this moment. The two had been engrossed within the moment as well as each other and thus they had failed to see the disaster which followed in their steps. Upon the grass a figure followed, wrapped in the cold dark grasp of the winter’s night, misty breath rolling from his lips to the air before him.
Things happened so quick that it shocked the loves to a paralyzed state of body and mind. Leons body fell forward following a dull thud as the branch of a tree was slammed against the back of his head. His mind was now flickering back and forth upon the edge of consciousness while a muffled scream touched his ears.
Rancid breath that reeked of smoke and alcohol flooded Kelly’s nostrils as a rough voice began to speak to her “Shut up girl!” Give me all you got, now.” She could feel the tip of what she presumed to be a knife pressed against her stomach and it frightened her even more; even if she wanted to speak she would find herself at a loss for words.
That night had not been one on which Leon nor Kelly had been intending to spend any money, they had eaten at home and were on a simple stroll through the park and so she had no money to give. “I-I Don’t have anything...” The fright that she felt within her heart and mind was now in her voice. She feared for her own life as well as Leons.
The man before her seemed confused by what she had said; no reason to think she was lying came to mind as he could hear honest beneath the fear in her voice. He knew that she may not have money but he was not about to leave without having gotten something from the girl. The tip of the blade was pressed more into her stomach which caused a whimper of pain to come from her lips. “Take off the clothes.” The man said roughly.
Her right arm crossed instinctively over her chest as though that would be enough to protect her form the prying eyes and wandering hands of this man. Her mind would form not a single word to protect her at this moment and so she had to settle for a simple shake of the head for an answer; knowing that her point would get across.
Telling the story later she would swear upon her life that the man had growled at her for her answer before his hand rose and she was struck in the face with the back of his hand. She could not help but let a small gasp come from her lips as she was struck, nearly falling to the ground. The Man was not about to let such an opportunity goes unused and so he pushed off of his left foot to throw himself against her, using his weight and strength to tackle her down to the ground.
Kelly was fighting against his body and hands as best that she could but soon found her hands pinned up over her head by the wrist. She was struggling against him as she felt the button of her pants being released and as she felt that she finally found her voice and shrieked at the very top of her lungs for a total of 5 seconds before her mouth was suddenly filled with a piece of fabric that reeked of body stink and taste of dirt. Tears now lined her cheeks as she desperately fought against him.
She could feel that The Man was attempting to slip his hand down into her pants though her mind went from that too the sound of footsteps smacking against the asphalt of the parks pathway. She looked past her attacker to see that Leon had gotten off of the ground and was now running towards them. The Man must have seen Kelly’s eyes or heard Leons feet, either way he had now turned his head around to see Leon running at him. He raised his hands to defend against the boy but Leon leapt at him before they got very high.
Quiet grunts of pain came from the two men before they grew suddenly quiet after hitting the ground. Movement could be heard by Kelly’s ears and the next that she saw the man was running away into the shadows. Kelly watched him go and waited until the man was out of site before she finally rolled over onto her stomach to crawl towards Leon.
She got a few feet before she saw a glint of light coming from Leons chest. “Oh my…Leon!” As she drew nearer to Leons body she saw that protruding straight from his chest was the knife that had been at her stomach, he had been stabbed when he had gotten him away from her. Kelly now knelt at Leons side with tears still streaming down her face, her hand placed over her mouth in shock.
Leon could hear her next to him, the sobs that left her mouth as she saw the pain that he was in and she let his head tilt towards her and he gave her as big a smile that didn’t show he was in pain “Hello love…are you ok?” He reached out to her with his right hand, it was shaking rather violently but he still did his best to caress her cheek with a gentle touch. A few seconds passed before he let his hand drop as Kelly began to nod at his question “I’m…glad to hear it…I wish that I could…say the same.”
Kelly reached out and returned the touch that Leon had bestowed upon her by touching his cheek “No Leon you will be fine, WE will be fine.” Her tears were falling in such a way that they seemed endless.
Leon shakes his head once, his breath was ragged and his vision blurred. He knew what was coming to him, even if Kelly didn’t or refused to believe it. His fingers wound themselves through Kelly’s and he held her hand as firmly as he could manage “Kelly, my love. You will…always be the woman…I love. Not even…death will change that…” A single tear spilled down his right cheek as he spoke.
“Leon don’t say that…death is not coming for you.” She returned his hold with her own, hoping that if she held on tight enough she could keep her beloved with her.
Leon nods at what she had said, a smile upon his face as he finds words to speak “You…are right….not death…but god…” As he spoke his hands was gradually losing its grip with Kelly’s, his strength leaving with his life.
Kelly could feel him slipping away from her, she was watching the only man she had eve loved die long before his time. She had so much to say to him and all of it could be summed up with 4 words “I love you Leon…”
Leon smiled at her as his bottom lip began to tremble and tears fell freely down the side of his face. When he spoke next his voice was cracking and it was apparent the sadness that he felt “I love you too…Kelly.” His hand lost grip with hers and it fell to the ground.
Kelly bit her lip so that she would stop herself from breaking down and losing precious minutes with her love. She could hear sirens in the distance as someone had obviously heard her scream, but she knew that they would arrive too late. She had but one more thing to ask of him. “Leon…wait for me on the other side…will you do that for me?” She picked her hand up and held it within both of hers as close to his chest as he could manage.
Leon managed to give her a small nod of answer before his eyes shut and his breathing stopped. Kelly could feel that the pulsations of his heart had stopped and she was now holding a lifeless hand. She reached forward with the dirty rag upon her hand and took the knife gently from his chest and placed it upon the ground. She sat there for a few moments to simply stare at the lifeless body before her and finally she broke down. She threw herself upon Leons chest and wrapped her arms around his neck and she cried. The sounds of her sadness could make the most hardened of criminals shed a tear for her loss.
Police and paramedics showed up minutes later and were forced to pry her arms away from the body; they took her kicking and screaming. The body was put onto a stretcher and covered with a sheet before it was loaded into the back of an ambulance that drove away silently with no lights or sirens; the boy was dead and they all knew it. A boy was killed and a Hero born.
The boy’s parents were phoned to give them the news of their loss; the officer was forced to stay on the phone to listen to the screams of a grieving mother and the sobs of a grieving father. Never before had the man heard another man cry as hard as the man on the phone had that night.
When the parents got to the morgue to identify their son they lost control for the third time that night. The mother was holding her boy close to her chest hoping that he would wake up to return her embrace, it never came. The dad was forced to take her from the room as he shed silent tears for his boy.
We go now to the beginning of our story; to the parents and the girl who cry. Questions may come to your mind as to the knowledge I have gained of these moments, the answer is quite simple. I am the boy within the casket, forced to stand idly by and watched the loved ones I care so much about cry over their lost child.

Well, technically they are still called Ambulances so Nisei was right to say Ambulance, it's just not an ambulance in the same sense that it can turn on a siren to forgo traffic barriers. It still has to obey the traffic code as civilian vehicles. A body CANNOT be taken away from a scene without a Coroner to check for anything suspicious and do the normal procedure before the body can be taken back to the morgue for further examination. Course, the procedure is slightly different inside that of a hospital.
American TV Dramas don't get it right. Neither do the British. British ones are black with ambulance written in white and they typically with deliver the body to the nearest morgue regardless of what Funeral Director the family chose. Noticeably, it's easier to say ambulance regardless of whether it's for the injured or the dead than to say Coroner's Van. As with everything in Human language, they go with what's quicker to say in situations like that.
Course, Nisei is most likely writing in an American setting? So it's probably not going to be black. That's what I know, I have an experience of Ambulancesof that manner, particularly British ones >D
